Maigret and the Wine Merchant Customer Review: Vintage Maigret
This late Maigret novel, written in 1969, has the venerable commissaire somewhat nonplussed by the mores of the people he’s investigating. The wine merchant of the title is the corpse in the case, and a nasty piece of work he turns out to have been. Not for the first time in Simenon, it is easier for both the policeman and the reader to empathise with the killer than with the victim. Nonetheless, justice must be done.

Simenon didn’t write Christie-style whodunnits where everyone is gathered in the library for the big d?noument. Sometimes Maigret is able to close the case because an eye-witness is found; sometimes an anonymous informant provides vital information; sometimes the killer chooses to give himself up. What keeps me coming back to the Maigret series is the author’s ability, in very spare prose (well translated here by Eileen Ellenbogen), to illuminate the extraordinary lives of apparently ordinary people.
