Linux is a great operating system. It’s reliable and compact, but does it lack the ability to run the more popular Windows-based applications. Now, Wine Rack offers offers a ray of hope for cross-platform application support for fans of Suse’s implementation of Linux. It’s a software package containing a number of programs that emulate the Windows environment, and thanks to the inclusion of CrossOver Office and WineX, a wide variety of applications and games software will now run happily in a Linux world.

From the outset it’s only fair that not every Windows app can be made to run, and sometimes it’s necessary to do a lot of fiddling to get something to come close to running properly. However, for the larger apps–including Microsoft’s Office and Adobe’s Photoshop everything seems to run fairly smoothly. Games are even more fickle than productivity apps but there’s a goodly selection supported by WineX and it makes a fair job of running them at reasonable speed though it’s always wise to check before going through the rigours of installation. It’s also a fair bet that the very latest games might present you with some serious issues as WineX is a constantly evolving open-source product and subject to constant flux and change. –Chris Russell

Customer Review: Does what it says on the box
I used this with my RedHat system, and the CrossOver products worked perfectly from the RPMs. The ease of use of CrossOver definitely makes it very attractive, and I had IE up and running in no time. WineX requires a custom version of python that is more fiddly to install, but the source is included so you can recompile it. If you’ve been wanting CrossOver but holding out because of the price, this is definitely the package for you.
Customer Review: Cheers for the Wine Rack!
The very nature of my job means that I need to use a fair few Microsoft products, but I try desperately to avoid their Operating Systems! The Microsoft Office Suite is a truly excellent package, and with the ability to run this under a Linux OS it’s almost as though my dreams have come true! I have as yet only installed Office 97 under Wine Rack and I am more than delighted with the ease of installation both of CrossOver program and the Office Suite. I, for one, will be intending to register the package so that I can get the free updates!

This great looking, slim-line wine fridge is ideal for those people who like to have wine to hand at the correct temperature but don’t particularly want to buy a large 40 bottle wine fridge. It stores up to six bottles lying down and one bottle upright at the bottom. As it chills by using Peltier technology instead of a refrigerant compressor it is extremely quiet and very lightweight. This makes it ideal for use in the lounge or dining room. It has a digital readout on the front showing its current internal temperature and push button controls to set the desired temperature you would like. It has 8 pre-set levels for different types of wine ranging from 7-20? C, with preset 8 being the coolest. Due to its innovative Peltier cooling technology it only costs as much to run as a 100W light-bulb. This Peltier technology will cool the wine fridge to 13 degrees below the ambient so in a room of 20 degrees C the lowest the unit will go is 7? C. Please note that the unit will have trouble cooling below this level.
