Customer Review: Woman King
This was my first try of Iron and Wine and I have to say it’s a pretty good starting place. Short enough to give you enough taste of the style and long enough to enjoy the beautiful and melodious music. The ep is full of beautiful guitars and evocative lyrics throughout and the songs ‘Jezebel’ and ‘Evening on the ground’ are especially captivating. If you like this I reckon it’s pretty safe to say you’ll like the other albums. Overall a great slice of music to chill out to and be moved by.
Customer Review: The king is a woman
At least Sam Beam is willing to experiment with his sound — the Florida singer-songwriter has been expanding his brand of Southern folk-rock over the course of two albums. In the EP “Woman King,” containing songs about women, he expands it even more. Clattering percussion and a steady guitar strum open “Woman King,” a murmuring midtempo song that serves as a solid liftoff point for the rest of the EP. “Freedom Hangs Like Heaven” and “Evening on the Ground (Lilith’s Song)” simmer quietly with their country-folk-flavored chord, but backed by… well well, is that an electric guitar roiling in the background? The other three slightly softer songs edge close to pop — “Jezebel” is a soft, flowing ballad with Bible-edged lyrics. “Who’s seen Jezebel/She was born to be the woman we could blame/Maybe a beast that is brave I’d be the same.” The remaining songs are so delicte that they hardly seem to belong to the same album as the more robust numbers. Of course, that isn’t surprising. In some ways, this EP feels like Beam is stretching his wings — he includes more instrumentation, including a couple of ballads that are laced with piano. The one downside is that the songs on it veer wildly from folky to balladic pop, completely without warning. Fortunately, the music itself is very good — the guitar and fiddle add a out-in-the-wild flavor to this music, along with the tribal-sounding drums in “Woman King.” The one clumsy element is probably the electric guitar in the final song — it sounds like the grinding sound was just pasted in there to add a bit of edge to the melody. Beam’s songwriting supports the music, often poetic and pensive as he looks at women of different types. “Evening On The Ground (Lilith’s Song)” is the one exception — instead of delivering his standard sweet murmur, he snaps out that “We were born to fuck each other/one way or another.” Erm, okay. It just doesn’t fit with the other songs. Iron and Wine is still in good form with “Woman King.” The EP has some new flourishes, and fortunately only a couple of them fall flat. Just hope whatever album is next will be so good.

Don’t Break The Bottle (Corkscrew Edition)
As the consummate host, you should never turn away an uninvited house guest. But in the event of a guest who makes it their mission to sample your finest vino, we would like to issue you with some standard equipment: the Don’t Break the Bottle puzzle. Place your most treasured wine in the puzzle and lock it up, paying strict attention to the instructions it comes with. The wine will then be imprisoned in a seemingly impenetrable fortress. Only you will know how to unlock the puzzle and release the bottle. Should your drinks cupboard be probed, your finest wine will remain safe and sound, whilst your thirsty visitor fumes over how to untangle the mess of balls and blocks. If all goes according to plan, they will give up after approximately ten minutes and return home.

Customer Review: 8/10. Excellent mini-album
Iron and Wine and Calexico have collaborated well on this fine EP, which pits Samuel Beam’s alt-country credentials against the latter band’s widescreen musicianship. It is an easy match, since Beam’s soft, sometimes melancholic vocals are not dissimilar to that of Calexico’s Joey Burns. Whereas Iron and Wine is a solitary lo-fi proposition, Calexico adds a trademark cinematic grandeur to his intimate sondwriting, with evocative sliding steel guitar, mournful trumpets and shuffly percussion. It is redolent of the vast south-western US skies, imagery popularised by the likes of Gus Van Sant’s ‘My Own Private Idaho’ or Wim Wenders’ ‘Paris, Texas’. Of the different styles proferred on this mini-album, the dreamy slowcore of ‘Sixteen, Maybe Less’ works best for me, comparable to the delicate precision of Tram’s ‘Frequently Asked Questions’. Also brilliant is the opener ‘He Lays in the Reins’, which chucks a little Mariachi vocal sample into the mix for a perfect curveball, which serves as a prototype for ideas fleshed out by Calexico on their stunning ‘Roka (Danza de la Muerte)’. Another highlight for me is the sombre Angelo Badalemente/Mark Isham-style horns of ‘Burn That Broken Bed’, a bluesy mood piece that doesn’t sound wholly like either act. The result is lusher than an Iron & Wine record, and with subtler songwriting than Calexico’s normal output. If you like this, try the aforementioned artists, plus Lambchop’s ‘Nixon’.
Customer Review: Stunning EP
This a great CD. He Lays in the Reins (Track 1) is terrific. The melody is haunting, floating on Sam Beams vocals and harmonies, reinforced with guitars and pianos. Oh yes, and there’s a Mexican spanking out an interlude “Pavarotti style” half way through. Lovely. It’s fascinating to see the kinds of influences that you can conjure up for this EP. For instance, several tracks have a strong Jazz influence (I guess from Calexico) – particularly Burn that Broken Bed, which is reminiscent of David Sylvian during his Brilliant Trees / Secrets of the Beehive period. On Red Dust, on the other hand, it’s as though Ben Harper and Talk Talk decided to write a track together – with funky guitars, wild harmonica solos, and great melody of course. These kinds of comparisons are odd, because Iron and Wine’s more usual comparisons are probably with the likes of the Great Lake Swimmers, Northern and Western, Mark Kozelek, and Sufjan Stevens. All the remaining songs have charm, displaying more obvious signs of their country origins – with great lyrics playing a major role in making tracks like Prison on Route 41, and Sixteen, Maybe Less stand out. I’m not sure about Calexico, so I guess I’ll need to explore their music now. However, if you like this album you’ll certainly enjoy the rest of Sam Beam’s work as Iron and Wine.

Elegant Lead Crystal Wine Glasses / Goblet 170g Per Glass - Set of Six
Customer Review: Beware of these
They looked very nice in the photos, especially the 2 shown laying on green satin, but arrived packed in a flimsy white box with dividers, poorly packed and one was broken. I expected a nice presentation box as this was a Christmas present. I eventually returned them and received a full refund.

Customer Review: Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna.
A long series of Strauss music recordings conducted by Willi Boskovsky provides the contents of this slender, super-compact box of 6 CDs. Those who collected the original issues should check the contents before jettisoning them, because not everything has been reissued here. I especially regret that the vocal version of “An der sch?nen blauen Donau” has been omitted. No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item’s inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of “Morgenbl?tter” seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items. The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.
